Change4Life in West Newcastle

Change4Life West Newcastle is a partnership of providers linking up existing services and projects to encourage families in the inner-west of Newcastle to Eat Well, Move More and Live Longer.

The objectives of the C4L West Newcastle Partnership are to:

  • Increase physical activity, specifically in inactive groups
  • Improve nutritional and/or cooking skills of families and specific children’s groups
  • Help participants set realistic goals to achieve behaviour change
  • Encourage children, young people and parents to develop skills to help others (e.g. peer support/young sports leaders/young cooks/health champions)
  • Build capacity of front line staff to deliver key consistent messages through the Partnership
  • Focus on improving the health of children 0-11 (early & primary years) to ensure early intervention and prevention
  • Provide mentoring, volunteering and peer support opportunities specifically for teenagers and adults
  • Provide a family focus

The objectives of the Partnership have been achieved by focusing on children, young people and their families to help reduce and prevent obesity. The partnership works in the areas around the ten feeder schools for Excelsior Academy and the four Roman Catholic Schools in the area as well as in Children’s Centres and Community settings in the West end.

The wider Partnership is brought together by Kath English, the C4LWest Newcastle Coordinator based in HealthWORKS Newcastle, who aims to link all organisations and projects in the area working on healthy eating and physical activity into the programme. This work is funded by Newcastle City Council.

Change4Life Partnership

C4L West Newcastle wider partnership meets three times a year. These events are for sharing information and updates about funded and non-funded projects. The aim of the partnership is to gather service providers who work with children, young people and their families and help them reduce and prevent obesity though the key C4L message – Eat Well, Move More, Live Longer.

What is a Change4life champion?

A Change4life Champion is a local resident, volunteer or worker from east and west Newcastle who volunteers their time to attend a C4L Champion workshop. At the workshop, they learn about health, both on a family and on a community level.

Anyone can become a Champion as long as they have somewhere to spread the C4L key messages. This could be a parent from a school, a volunteer at community project or a paid worker.

All Champions are different and they can do a variety of things from simply registering their setting as a C4L supporter, putting up a display or making sure C4L information is available to people.

Some Champions run their own packed lunch sessions, swapathons, and activity groups. It’s up to the individual Champion and their setting to decide what they’d like to do.
Our C4L Champion Support worker will offer initial support with any ideas and keep in touch on a regular basis.

We also off our Champions other activities that become available and link into any relevant free training. Examples of past courses include:

  • Microwave and Halogen cookery
  • Food Hygiene
  • Cooking on a Budget
  • Love Food Hate Waste
  • Money Matters

and much more.

If you want to know more or would like to become a champion please contact the C4L Champion Support worker Lisa Conroy on 0191 272 4244 or lisa.conroy@hwn.org.uk or contact us on Facebook.
