Healthworks Food Skills Team

We offer a range of activities in venues throughout Newcastle.

Cooking together

The team deliver a range of courses, click on each activity for more information:

  • Weaning – practical advice about moving your baby from breast or bottle feeding to solid food
  • Big Cook Little Cook-parents and grandparents cook, learn and taste together
  • Cooking from Scratch– basic healthy meals using seasonal fruits and vegetables
  • Budget Cooking– practical healthy cooking on a budget with tips to reduce food cost
  • Love Food Hate Waste– workshops with tips on reducing food waste
  • Halogen / Microwave Cooking– different ways of cooking from scratch that saves you time and money
  • Food Hygiene -basics of food storage and hygiene . An accredited course. Everyone completing the course can gain skills and a certificate

Several courses include the option to join in a physical activity- a key part of leading a healthier life. This gives you enough confidence to take part in other exercise sessions in centres wherever you live.

We work alongside other projects where people grow their own food and make the most of green spaces near their homes. So our recipes include food we’ve grown, then eat. super healthy!

Our Food Skills team is involved with groups with specific needs, helping them break down barriers so they too, learn cooking skills, lead a healthier lifestyle, meet other people and become more independent. In 14 primary schools, children are learning to “Eat Well, Move More , Liver Longer.”

These projects are supported by Sure Start Children’s Centres, Change4Life, Newcastle City Council, Community Foundation and Make Your Mark and others.
