Everyone has choices but taking responsibility to make good choices can be harder for some than for others – we can help!

Sure Start has co-located with Healthworks to give children the best start possible.

Leader of Newcastle City Council, Cllr Nick Forbes along with Parent Voice members officially declared the ‘hub’ open at the launch event on Tuesday 9 September.

Over fifty people attended including Cllr Jane Streather, partners and staff, where all of the joint work with photos and slide shows, including a display of children’s work from over the summer holiday was showcased.

“A fantastic event, great networking , looking forward to working together” – just one of many comments made.

HealthWORKS Newcastle has been providing services from the Health Resource Centre on Adelaide Terrace in Benwell for 17 years and Sure Start has been providing activities, advice and support to families in the west end of Newcastle for over 13 years. The two agencies have always worked well together and now we can work even more closely to the benefit of children, families and the local community.

The exciting news is that both organisations will now work out of the same location, right in the heart of Benwell. This is the perfect location – being surrounded by family housing and with good transport links throughout the area. Jointly, HealthWORKS and Sure Start will now deliver activities on site which include a low cost community gym, a Food Skills Team offering lots of advice, courses and activities around food, nutrition and healthy lifestyles, alongside Sure Start family activities, parenting advice and support and play and learning opportunities.

Lin Simmonds, Sure Start Lead said ‘this idea has been quite a long time coming into being and so I am delighted we can now launch an accessible and attractive place for children, families and the local community to benefit from services, activities and support when and where it is needed.’

Sarah Cowling CEO HealthWORKS said “Now that Sure Start is located in the Health Resource Centre their activities are easily accessible to the families living in the local area. The purpose designed space includes new staff offices as well as an impressive new play space including access to an outdoor area and mud kitchen”

Local parent and active member of our ‘Parents’ Voice’ Aimi Henderson, has been attending Sure Start Groups since her daughter Ava (now 3) was a baby. She says “The co-location has made a massive difference to the amount of families that can now access Sure Start and HealthWORKS. It is ideal to have this hub of activity in the heart of the community, making things accessible to all”.
