The Newcastle Hospitals’ Community Dental Services, Oral Health Promotion Team and 0-19 Health Visiting and School Nursing Services invited four local primary schools in Newcastle-upon-Tyne to take part in an exciting poster competition as part of 2016 National Smile Month activities.

Year 6 children (aged 10-11yrs) from St John’s, Canning Street, Broadwood and Bridgewater Primary Schools all took part in the competition to promote the importance of looking after your mouth. The children were invited to design a bright, eye catching poster to help encourage other children to look after their teeth and mouth. Their poster design was to include the main mouth care messages such as:

  • why it is important to go to the dentist,
  • why we should regularly brush our teeth, and
  • which healthy food and snacks do not harm our teeth;

All children taking part in the competition received a SMILE pencil and eraser; a toothbrush 2 minute timer and toothpaste.

A winning poster was selected from each school, from these, one overall winner was chosen. Prizes were awarded as part of the Healthy School Award ceremony which was held on 7th July.

The lucky overall winner was rewarded for their efforts with a treat for the whole family – five family tickets to attend the Empire Cinema at the Gate, Newcastle. The three remaining runners up all received one family visit to the Empire Cinema. The overall winning poster will be displayed in dental practices, community centres and libraries during the school holiday.

There’s also a chance for local groups and organisations supporting all ages across Newcastle to take advantage of a ‘looking after the mouth’ visit from student dentists. This will be in 2017 starting last week in February through to first week in July 2017; mornings only between 10am and 12noon (for about 30-45 minute slot).

All free.
