Community Focus

Involving and responding to users and the community; openness and provision of information; adaptability to changing circumstances and needs

Impact award ceremonyIt is our policy to employ local people wherever possible; currently 83% of our 70 staff live within 2 miles of where they work. This gives our staff excellent local knowledge and a clear understanding of the issues and pressures of living in these areas.

This policy has the added benefit of up-skilling local people, through the training and support we offer all staff. After starting with us with very few formal qualifications of any sort, some of our staff leave to pursue further / higher education.

The majority of clients who connect with the Community Health Trainer team are self referrals (72%), demonstrating that our service is reaching people directly without a referral from a health professional.

We support a small team of local volunteers, who work within the Food and Nutrition and reception teams. We offer work experience places for both school age young people, and undergraduates, who live or study in Newcastle.

We hold focus group sessions each quarter to refresh our understanding of local issues. Feedback from clients is also an important reflective tool for our self assessment process. External partners also ask us to organise focus group sessions looking at specific issues on their behalf e.g. bowel cancer awareness raising work with Elaine Wilson re a social marketing approach / BBC funding cake exercise etc
