Leadership, creativity and initiative in addressing current challenges in health care access and delivery.

Impact award ceremonyAs an organisation HealthWORKS has been through many phases and adaptations in response to new challenges. Most recently we underwent large scale re-organisation with a change in leadership (Jan 2008) and the new identity as HealthWORKS Newcastle (previously West End Health Resource Centre).

Since then HWN has doubled in size and managed a fundamental shift from reliance on grant funding to a mixed economy. 2009 /2010 saw 68% of funding coming from contracts and 30% from grant aid. As an independent social enterprise we are able to respond flexibly to new challenges and tend to be less risk averse than larger organisations.

We are willing to try out short term pilot programmes and test new ways of working in search of the best methods of supporting effective lifestyle change and improving wellbeing across some of the most deprived communities in the city. For example, WEHRC was a pathfinder organisation for the development of the Community Health Trainer programme and the model we employ has developed out of this work. It is significantly different to how Health Trainer teams are utilised in many other areas and focuses on a community development approach to improving health via a social prescribing model.
