Healthy Eating

We know that making just a few simple swaps to what you eat and drink can have a hugely positive effect on your health and weight.

We also understand that it can be really difficult to know where to start or to keep going without personal support.

Fruit in the shape of a heartOur Community Health Trainers are here to offer you the advice and guidance you need to stay on track and to help you continue to make good choices that can help you improve your health and wellbeing.

This service is absolutely free and you will benefit from one to one support which is tailored to your own personal needs.  You’ll meet up with a member of the team up to six times and together you will identify ways to improve your diet, manage your weight and plan for longer term maintenance too.

The Community Skills Team deliver a range of sessions for parents/carers and children for Newcastle City Council’s Community Family Hub West.  These sessions cover a range of topics and themes including Starting Solids, parents and children cooking together, the Eat well guide, portion sizes and how to cook healthier family meals.

“Let’s Get Cooking with Healthworks”

Each week our Community Skills Team share their “recipe of the week” as a step by step video guide and recipe card download.  The aim of these is to support and encourage people to get cooking and to enjoy healthy, low cost and tasty food with their families!

The recipes can also be found on our You Tube Channel

This weeks recipe is:

Change 4 Life

Our Change4Life Early Intervention Health Trainers work in early years settings to promote the three key Change4Life messages ‘Eat Well, Move More & Live Longer’ in the West and East in targeted areas of the city.

They offer:

  • Healthy eating information and support for families including portion sizes/ reducing sugar
  • Cooking  demonstrations and practical hands on sessions
  • In depth one to one support for parents for up to six weeks
  • Promoting the national and local Change4Life campaigns

In addition, we deliver a range of practical basic cooking sessions which link to local and to national campaigns such as Newcastle Sugar Smart and Eat Well.  These sessions may also include support around budgeting, reducing waste, fuel saving cooking methods and alternative healthy cooking choices.

Cook, Play and Learn

Our Community Skills Team has been developing some lovely Cook Play and Learn activities with our friends over at the Community Family Hub West.

Every Wednesday at 10am the Community Family Hub team host a facebook storytime where they read a favourite children’s story and we have produced a lovely online activity resource to accompany the story and really bring it to life through activity ideas, videos, recipes and virtual experiences.

You can access the resources here:
